Summary

According to Dayo Adesulu, in his article, “Pen to Help Children with Learning Disorders Designed”, the author mentions that the Multimedia Printer Reader (MRP) talking pen boosts students’ learning in the 21st century. An educationist and physician thinks the talking pen assists learners who suffer from learning disorders and children who are visually challenged. In addition, it could be a good implement for in English Language Teaching (ELT) because it helps students using correct pronunciation and enunciation. Also the talking pen enhances self-learning and would be beneficial for the parents who cannot read or write. An entrepreneur thinks MRP is a very useful technology for learning; it will be introduced in the educational system.

Reaction

Nowadays, many kind of teaching equipments have been invented, such as electronic boarda and talking pen. The talking pen is an effective tool for learning in the 21st century. My little younger brother had a story book which functioned like a talking pen; the story book used MRP technology to make the pen get the signal and read the sentences. When I saw the story book, I felt very interested. How could this product make learning become a fun thing? I can’t forget that my brother used to read the book again and again because the book aroused my brother’s learning motivation. Therefore, I think talking pen is one of a good inventions to learning in 21st century.

Pedagogy of multiliteracies (2011, April 12). Literacies and Multiliteracies. From http://natalia.ronda.ca/dcp/pedagogy.htm.

Summary:

This article talks about the importance of integrating technology in the educational process, and the importance of technology in the educational process because it develops students skills such as reading and writing. Also it talks about the importance of democracy in the educational process. Moreover, with technology, students can participate better in the educational process. It is important to train teachers on technology for this process to be useful in teaching. Also, to enrich the educational process, teachers should use the technology so that students benefit from their experience. Finally, the success of any educational process is based on the student and teacher, and their way in deal with problems.

Reaction:

I think it is important to use modern technology in the educational process to help both the teacher and the student to improve the educational process. And also I think that with the technology the role of the student will be activating within the school. In addition, the technology will help the students to create an atmosphere of enthusiasm and diligence. And also the technology will help develop the capacity of both the teacher and student in the multiliteracies. In addition, these are sessions that are held frequently to train students and teachers to have anything new in the computer world, and serve the educational process. The teacher depends on the computer in his commentary through the use of PowerPoint. And also the teacher sends the duties of the article to students by email and so on. I think that the teacher's use of the technology in the learning process is a positive point.

The Multiliteracies Map

Reference:
The Multiliteracies Map. (2010, January 05). Government of South Australia. Retrieved on April 8, 2011, from http://www.earlyyearsliteracy.sa.edu.au/pages/resource/21402/?reFlag=1

Summary:
In this article, the author introduces The Multiliteracies Map, which is divided into four dimensions: the functional dimension, the meaning making dimension, the critical dimension, and the transformative dimension. This map was developed based on research which is focused on children whose ages were 4-8, and it is used by educators to learn how to educate children and how to evaluate them. In this research, the author concludes that children must be able to learn both traditional and digital literacy smoothly at the same time.

Reaction:
I remember that my father bought a computer for the first time when the Windows 95 was on sale. I was 12 years old, and I could not learn how to use it at all. Today, I have come to use it in my job or in my home every day and understand how to use it effectively. Considering of The Multiliteracies Map, however, I found myself to be poor at the functional dimension, and I do not know what it means. In this article, the research got a wonderful consequence. As the author says in the very last sentence, “today’s children must be able to do more.” I think it is true, but teachers who can educate children in digital literacy correctly are required for children. Then the world will be smaller and more useful in the future.

Summary:
In this article, the authors said that literacy and literate practice should include a variety of knowledge, because of the globalization and technology progress. They said that students must be able to several things at the same time (multi-tasking). The authors mentioned that there are five semiotic systems: “the linguistic, the visual, the gestural, the spatial and the aural". So the 21st-century individuals need to be able to do use and deal with all five semiotic systems. Also, the authors mentioned that any multiliterate must be able to know every detail in a printed text or electronically-showed text in order to analyze and discover equivocation. Also, they said they prepared "professional development programs" to assist teachers in becoming advanced in multiliteracies comprehension. These programs, according to the authors, were designed to fit the needs of the clients, including some techniques and strategies to improve the teachers' performance. The authors said that teachers' participation is extremely important to integrate the use of multiliteracies. In addition, they described the obtained results of their multiliteracies projects.

Reaction:
In my opinion, this article is very useful, and it deals with a very modern aspect, multiliteracies. The main idea of this article is wonderful, because it suggests new methods and presents a mega project to make students familiar with 21st-century requirements. I think that the given details and the mentioned examples in this article are very well expressed, for the necessary skills on them the authors focused on the new needs which have become mandatory to survive in this era. Also, I think that such projects which the authors engaged in are very beneficial, because they will help us to provide the suitable environment to learn and to use multiliteracies. I think that the success in the projects of the authors is proved by the obtained results which show deep understandings to multiliteracies gained by the participating teachers. In addition, the participating teacher said that they improved their way of dealing with students; they get better, and this is evidence, in my opinion, which encourages people to take an interest in learning and teaching multiliteracies.

Summary
In this article author talked about the riskiness of crossing the street while using mobile phone for older people. The author said that there is research indicating that multitasking can affect the activities that older people do. The writer added that the study found that older adults have less chance of crossing the street in less than 30 seconds than the younger people. Also the older people take more time to start walking. The writer refers to this delay in walking rising when they are talking on cell phones. The writer mentioned that the cell phone is one of things that makes the mind does not think correctly when crossing the street. One’s mind must be unfilled to know the distance between one and the coming cars and know the speed of the car so one can cross safely. Some professors are interested in knowing the internal processes in the brain that cause slowing in the older age. These professors made a street to know about the reasons through simulation. After that, they bring equal number of university students and the older people to cross the street when they talk on phone. Through this experience they saw that the older people take a longer time than the university students to cross. The writer mentioned that the study says that the mobile causes a danger to people, especially older people when crossing the street. In the end the author tells us that there are some areas that prevented the use of electronic devices when crossing the street or driving a car.

Reaction
Through this article I want to speak about two important subjects each of them linked together. First is the person when he/she grow up, he/she is susceptible to the change. No one stays at the same situation. Each stage in the life has activities that increase or decrease depending on the age. A child cannot do what the university student does and what the university student does the older people cannot do. This thing is due to reasons within the mind. I see that this article talks about this the subject correctly. Second is the danger that is happening when we are busy with electronic devices whether crossing the street or driving a car. These devices are taking the person's attention so that he/she cannot give the other subject any importance. In my opinion the ability to perform two jobs at the same time is not an easy thing for any person. Most people cannot give attention to doing more than one job. This does not mean that there are no people able to do two jobs at the same time. I see that the older people are less capable of performing two jobs at one time because the mind’s ability is not equal to that of the university student.

Multiliteracies and communications media (2011, April 6). Queensland (Aust.) Education. From http://education.qld.gov.au/corporate/newbasics/html/curric-org/comm.html

Summary:
This article talks about ways to connect people with each other, and communicate with the world. And these methods of communication are divided into two parts: the old methods of communication such as reading, and writing, and modern methods of communication such as the Internet. The media has evolved dramatically since World War II. Modern means of communication have contributed to the use of the old means of communication. For example you can not use the internet without the knowledge of the principles of reading. Also communications media contributed to the understanding of other cultures, and it has increased the importance of integrating communication tools, ancient and modern, in problem-solving and communication. Language is important to communicate what is happening, and often causes a misunderstanding because of language differences. Also it is important to know the numbers, history, customs and other things in the current time and widely used in communication.

Reaction:
I think that the media have contributed to communicating with the world, and the media have linked people in the world with each other. The world has become like a small village. I think that the media have contributed to educating communities. I also think that the media has helped in strengthening social ties. For example, I'm here in the United States and can communicate with my family by video and audio via the Internet or sound by telephone, or by writing by messenger or by using the mail. I agree with the content of this article that it is necessary to integrate communication tools, ancient, and modern with each other, and use language to communicate without relying solely on English language, in order to connect communities with each other well. I do not think anyone can use modern means of communication without the knowledge of the rules of reading, writing and arithmetic. This is one of the old means of communication. Also many countries are seeking to spread the culture of the communities through the media. This is the easiest way of any state, to publish what you want published to the world. But I think that there are some media that tarnished the image of their communities through the publication of some of the irregular behaviors and photographs as a rampant feature in society

Summary

This news story discusses the fact that nowadays technology and environment changes influence the system of education. Kids print their notes instead of scribbling notes by hand; sitting in rows, reading from textbooks and listening are out of date. Business leaders and educators rethink the blueprint of American education to help students get better preparation to exist in the 21st century. Knowing more about the word, thinking outside the box, becoming smarter about new sources of information, and developing good people skill will help students have more advantage to fit in the 21th century.

Reaction
In the 21st century, people have a successful life not only relying on their academic score but also from the way they think and their social ability. Technology and new knowledge are updating; therefore, changes make people be influenced a lot. Nowadays, students have to tell what is correct knowledge and news quickly, and do not always believe the textbook. They have to have their own thinking and viewpoint. The schools in 21st the century not only teach students the knowledge which is in the textbook, but also help students create their own thinking. Schools should understand nowadays changes and try to change their teaching style, so students can follow this generation easily. I think that a school’s teaching is an important factor in a person’s thinking for their whole life.

Summary:-

In this article, the author said that a social network such as Facebook teaches people how to organize the knowledge even it is not clear to them, because the information is already out, and people have to find it. And then Google opens you to a very huge amount of information, and what you have to do is just filter it and get what you need. After that learners need to take control of their own learning. Also, culture change is hard, but with the 21st century all of us are learning even professionals, because there is no limitation. Moreover, he said that technology is the only thing changed, and the best way to handle it is changing from pushing to pulling. Finally, he said the best summary is pull vs. push.

Reaction:-

In this article, the author talked about one of the biggest issues in these days, but in my opinion his article is weak. First of all, the author did not give us a clear answer for his questions, and he wrote about social network that helps us to organize information. But I did not find that in his article. I really like his idea about stop pushing and start pulling, but he could not support his idea very well. Yet he gave a good example for his idea, which is about the Google engine, and he asked us to stop pushing information on children, and I like that. But people are not the same, and you cannot make sure that all of them will get correct information. So, if you give all people the freedom, we will find many people have wrong information, and they will have an easy excuse which is “I found it on the Internet”. Especially with children, if you stop pushing, they will not get anything good. So, in my opinion what we have to do is learning the new technology, and make sure that we search in good sources. Also, we still have to push information because if we stop, the next generation will not be able to take any information from any person.

Multiliteracies and communications media

Reference:
Multiliteracies and communications media. (n.d). Queensland government (Australia) Retrieved on March 31,2011, from http://education.qld.gov.au/corporate/newbasics/html/curric-org/comm.html

Summary:
In this article, the author explained how to understand and communicate with today’s world by four elements. The New Basics category (Multiliteracies and communications media) is actually using codes to exchange the messages, texts, and information. But the old technologies that we have used for a long period of time such as writing, reading, speaking, arithmetic, and so on are still important in Multiliteracies and communications media. Mastering the old skills and blending, and dealing with both new and old technologies are the key to communicating with the world.

Reaction:
This article is too difficult for me to read and understand about the content. It is my honest feeling. Recently we have already used the new technologies such as the internet, email, and so on. When I read this article, I was relieved that we also need the old skills because I am bad at the new technologies represented in the computer technologies. I think, however, the ancient skill is the most important for us to communicate with people living in other cultures or speaking in other languages because we cannot tell about ourselves without mastery of the basic skills.

Multiliteracies and Communication Media

Multiliteracies and Communications Media. (n.d). Queensland(Aus.) provincial gov, DET Education. Retrieved on March 31, 2011. From http://education.qld.gov.au/corporate/newbasics/html/curric-org/com.html

Summary:
In this article, the author mentioned the new basics category, multiliteracies and communication media, that uses modern means for communicating since World War ‖, including the sophisticated electronic media such as TV., radio and other audiovisual media. He said that the old technologies are still needed beside the new technologies because these old technologies are necessary to the new basics; nevertheless, the new communication media reform the way of using old communication media. Therefore, for optimum use for communication media we have to figure out symbolic codes. The author suggested "blending traditional and new communication media" in order to solve our current problems. Also he said that creating wide range of media is essential for modern society. He focused on the importance of communicating using intercultural understandings. And finally he mentioned that it is very important for us to master literacy, numeracy, and traditional skills and techniques.
Reaction:
In my opinion, I think that this article is outstanding because the author explained everything in detail and gave good examples and modern methods which help people to communicate with the world. He discussed issues that maybe not clear to everyone especially blending traditional and new communication media in order to optimize the communications media. Also he was fantastic when he explained in detail how sometimes misunderstandings arise from misinterpretation of speaker’s intention, because using another language perhaps causes some problems when the speaker used a word or expression in a wrong place or in a wrong time. He also mentioned that the ability to work in the intermediate area between cultures is very easy to do in low level learner of another language, but it is mandatory for the world at the same time. He said that "the design and performance of multi-media texts-" that merges the new and the traditional, is needful to enable people to engage effectively in the developing process in the world, so I think this is an impressive idea because we need to share with all people, regardless their place or language. In my opinion, "communicating using languages" is very useful to us, because it simply enables us to communicate with other people from various cultures, this will make people (well) informed about the world.

Summary

In the first article the author talked about children and how they spend their
time in reading old books and listening to the instructions from their teachers. He told us that this method is an unsuccessful method and it will make the student fail in the global economy. We must create schools that are able to graduate students abreast of the economy. The writer mentioned that the competence in reading, mathematics and scientific and technical skills is not enough. He said the economy today required more competencies and skills. We should find out more knowledge with kids because they are the future they need to have a familiarity with the other world and learn their language and culture. Make the kids think deeply and accurately in all majors. The children must learn everything new to know what is happening around them and how they can use new technologies. The author sees we must develop good people skills, especially communication skills, because the projects and technologies today are among people from different countries and cultures. The writer question’s whether it is possible to make our schools do these competencies! The writer mentioned that there are places that will spend money and expertise to find success.

Reaction

This article talks about staying updated with developments, and it is something important. Accurately this article is not related to my major, but from my major I learned that we must keep pace with developments. I see people have to think internationally, they need to get new information from new sources, and they must communicate with other cultures to know what is happening with them. To this keep pace happening, I see building schools to teach students in all theoretical and scientific majors and teach them the culture of other societies. Schools in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have not applied this system yet. Schools in Saudi Arabia apply the regular education system, which teaches students without deepening them. If I get a chance I will give a suggestion to create a higher quality of schools. I liked this article and the content of the proposals. At the same time I think it's difficult to do these proposals and that will take a long time. It is possible to start to do this development on the part of schools, then expand to the rest of the schools.

How to bring school into 21st century. (2006,Dec). CNN. From a Time Magazine cover story. Retrieved on March 30, 2011 from www.google.com
Summary:
In this article, the author said that students spend much time in the school as in the past, which means like their grandparents, but this happened before digital age. Also, he said that during the last five years, which means 10 years from now, the schoolhouse, which focuses on reading, listening, and etc., made the students unable to solve problems such as problems because of misunderstanding the English language. In the 21st century, we had something called 21st century skills, which are very poor comparing to reading and math, but may be good. Then, the author talked about four of them which we should have to develop our world by bringing what we learned up to this time; therefore, he began with "knowing more about the world" which means people who know other cultures and are able to connect with them. After that, he talked about "thinking outside the box" which means thinking differently from the school way; also, the author talked about " becoming smarter about new sources of information" which means we should think about everything, which we have gotten, and whether it is reliable or not. Last but not least, he talked about "developing good people skills" which means developing your EQ, emotional intelligence. In conclusion, the author said that by adding new classes to our curriculum we could bring the school into 21st century.

Reaction:
In this article, I did not find what 21st century skills mean because what I read did not make sense to me. The author talked about four points which we should have before the 21st century, and these helped many people to be rich, famous or whatever. In my opinion, 21st century skills means technology skills more than the way of thinking or having more info. Using a computer or surfing the Internet does not mean that these are what we need. Each major or job has a special need with those, but we should have more to success in our job or school by using computer and Internet. For example, math is one of the most difficult classes in school, and it has a lot of complex problems such as the 3rd level of equation or higher. So, with the technology we do not use the old way to solve it, but what we have to learn is how we can use special programs on the computer. Therefore, there are a lot of skills that should be discussed before mentioning 21st century skills. Having the author's skills do not make us really able to catch up to people in this century. At this point, everyone should find the skills that he or she needs to be successful in the21st century.
